NFPA 72 (2025) Integration & Remote Access
Building Systems Are Now Connected and Regulated
The 2025 edition of NFPA 72 introduces stronger requirements for how fire alarm systems integrate with building automation, networked communicators, and remote access platforms. As buildings become more connected, the code now demands equal levels of supervision and cybersecurity.
Key updates include:
🔹 Building Management System (BMS) Integration
Fire alarm systems interfacing with building automation must now meet enhanced supervision and compatibility requirements per NFPA 72 §24.x (2025).
This includes monitored data exchanges, fail-safe behavior, and documented interface logic.
🔹 Remote Monitoring & Remote Access Oversight
New language in §26.2.11 and §26.6.3 requires verification of:
Authorized remote access
Connectivity integrity
Cloud/remote diagnostic pathways
Identification of intermediary service providers
These must be captured within system documentation and reflected on the Record of Completion.
🔹 Networked Communicators & Signal Path Supervision
Per §26.6.4, all communication paths—onsite, offsite, wireless, cellular, internet, or via intermediary service providers (defined in §3.3.156* )—must be:
Continuously supervised
Logged
Protected against unauthorized access or failure
Documented within ITM records
These changes significantly reduce false alarms and eliminate vulnerabilities caused by unmonitored network changes.
Why This Matters?
Modern buildings depend on interconnected systems. NFPA 72 (2025) ensures that fire alarm signals cannot be bypassed, corrupted, or misrouted, even when routed through third-party networks or cloud platforms.
At Capitol City Fire Protection & Life Safety, LLC, we ensure every integration point—from BMS connections to remote monitoring—is compliant, supervised, and secure.
