Inspection, Testing & Maintenance Updates: Staying Ahead of NFPA 72 (2025)

The 2025 edition of NFPA 72 introduces several strengthened requirements in Inspection, Testing & Maintenance (ITM) that impact installers, service providers, and facility owners. Key technical updates include:

🔹 Remote Service & Monitoring Verification

Per NFPA 72 §14.2.2.4 and §14.2.10, systems utilizing remote diagnostics, remote access, or cloud-based supervision must now document:

  • Connection integrity

  • Authorized remote access

  • Successful remote functional checks

  • Service provider identification

These verifications must be included in the ITM report and retained in the facility documentation cabinet (§7.7).

🔹 Secondary Power (Battery) Testing

Updated requirements in §14.4.1.2.3 and Table 14.4.3.2 clarify:

  • Battery load testing intervals

  • Charger output measurements

  • Required voltage thresholds

  • Documentation of battery replacement dates

Systems must now record deficiencies, calculations, and corrected re-test values.

🔹 Impairment Tracking & Notification

NFPA 72 (2025) aligns impairment handling more tightly with NFPA 1 and NFPA 101.
Per §14.6.1–14.6.3:

  • All impairments must be tagged, documented, and reported immediately to the owner or designated representative.

  • Impairment logs must remain accessible during audits.

  • Restorations must be logged and verified with updated ITM data.

Why This Matters?
