Paperwork Matters: New Documentation Standards in NFPA 72 (2025)

The 2025 edition of NFPA 72 introduces significantly expanded documentation requirements across every phase of fire alarm system performance.

Key changes include:

• Fully-detailed shop drawings per (§ 7.4) – submitted for plan review and showing device layout, riser diagrams, system pathways and control wiring.
• Record (as-built) drawings per (§ 7.5.5) – reflecting the actual installed system and revisions made after construction.
• A delivered Record of Completion (§ 7.5.6) – contractor’s signed statement declaring installation compliance and test results.
• Inspection, Testing and Maintenance (ITM) documentation per (§ 7.6) – logs, corrective actions and verification forms must be retained.
• All system documentation (§ 7.7) must be stored in a labelled documentation cabinet, accessible for audit or inspection.

Every signature, date and form protects both contractor and owner during audits and inspections.
