NFPA 72 Introduces “Restricted Audible Mode” for Sensitive Environments

New in the 2025 edition of NFPA 72 — the “Restricted Audible Mode Operation (RAMO)” lets fire-alarm systems reduce audible output in select spaces such as:

• Hospitals and healthcare treatment zones
• Schools and learning environments
• Neuro-diverse or sensory-sensitive areas

🧯 In RAMO zones, visual cues (strobes) remain fully active while horns or speakers operate at significantly reduced sound levels—designed to maintain safety without triggering panic or sensory overload.

🧯 Use of RAMO must be justified through a documented risk analysis, shown on the drawings, and approved by the AHJ. It typically requires staff to be awake, trained, and mobile.

Designing for safety and occupant comfort — that’s our mission at Capitol City Fire Protection & Life Safety, LLC.
